Happy Birthday Paul

Today is my son's 11th birthday. His name is Paul. Paul is a licensed amateur radio operator just like his old man. Can you tell I am proud?

Since it is Paul's birthday, this post is about Paul's most favorite ham radio activity. His radio thing is FPV drones. Long story short: if you fly analog FPV drones you really should have an amateur radio license to operate legally. Paul earned his technician license last summer while he was 10 years old. His drone uses a portion of the microwave bands that are allocated to amateur radio.

An FPV drone is a lot of fun. FPV = first person view. Imagine someone shrunk you down to miniature size and placed you in the pilot seat of a radio-controlled drone. The view you would see as the imaginary tiny pilot is the view you see when operating an FPV drone. But your feet never leave the ground.

A video feed is transmitted from the drone to goggles the drone pilot is wearing. We've mostly experimented with a tiny whoop style drone inside our house. It fits in the palm of your hand and can move incredibly fast! The view is comparable to riding a roller coaster.

Paul's callsign is KJ5QFS. He's a cool kid. He just made the chess team at school, loves Minecraft, solves Rubik's cubes, exhibits show goats, hunts deer, and helps me on the farm. And he is my most favorite ham buddy.

Happy birthday, Paul! I love you man.
